Surgery

On Monday, May 2nd, Tim will have the following procedure:

Tim will spend 4-5 days in the hospital after the surgery. The doctors will allow Tim to heal for about 3 months. Then Tim will get fitted for a prosthetic and rehab will start. All the while, he will also be going through 8 more rounds of chemo treatments. In about 6 months from the surgery, Tim should be walking on his own! However, the doctors think Tim will be walking before that time:) In about a year, Tim will be back to full activity-football, running, jumping, skiing, boating, basketball, riding motorcycles, etc.

This was not an easy decision to make for us. But if Tim is to have a full, active life, this is the way to go:) Along with talking to parents of kids who have had this procedure and doing research, we fasted and prayed as well. This is the right thing for Tim, no matter how hard it will be for the next year. But a couple of years from now, Tim, and the rest of the family, will look back with no regrets. We just have a long road ahead of us.

We plan to have a ward/family fast Sunday, May 1st for any who are interested in joining us. More info will come as the surgery gets closer about that. Please keep Tim in your prayers as the time gets closer for our little "bug" to have his life changed-again.

I'm so sorry that you were faced with such a hard decision. My heart was breaking for you yesterday when you came into RS. Your strength is remarkable.

what a difficult decision to have to make! what strength and faith you all have - especially tim!

it sounds like, though, that it will be the best in the long term. when we were on elena's make a wish trip in florida, we met a family whose daughter was born with cancer in her leg. the best option for them to not have it come back was to amputate the leg (and now she is 8 years cancer free!). it was considered extremely experimental when they did it, but they felt like it was right. i couldn't tell that she had a prosthetic leg at all! she was running, jumping, climbing, etc. just like the rest of the kids. she had a sense of humor about it, too. sometimes she's take her leg off and whap her siblings with it. :)

i hope all goes well with the surgery and for tim as he learns to make the adjustment. what a brave, brave guy! we will be praying and fasting along with you guys!

WOW!!:) Like you said on Sunday, this was a HUGE decision but I thought that video was amazing- like amazing that something like rotationplasty is possible. A long road ahead, you guys are always in our thoughts and prayers. Still think that the video is awesome. Tim will be so compasionate towards others differences, more compassionate than the average kid because of this time in his life. You give me courage to be a better mom!

I too am amazed by you guys! You are constantly in our prayers too. I'm sorry you have to make these kind of decisions in his young life... My mom had her leg amputated last year and I know it was a hard decision for her,and she is way older but she has never regretted it and she was up and walking within 2 months. Good luck!!

We love you guys Manda! You are constantly in our prayers! Please let us know how the surgery goes. You are more like a sister to me than a cousin. You are a rock and amazing in every way. If there is anything I can, please call. I'm always just a phone call away.

I dont think i have met you or maybe i dont remember, my son is tanner. I have been following your blog since kristi added it to our list. Never forget that with faith anything is possible but more importantly we don't know right now why things happen but somday we will. Have faith and follow kims example of a possitive attitude and things will be ok

Oh my goodness Amanda! Cameron and I have watched this video a couple of times just in awe that first of all someone thought of that, and now that is something you can actually do for him. So amazing, such a life-changing decision, but I KNOW that you guys are doing everything you are supposed to! We are all here, rooting for all of you! Like everyone has said before, you are all in our prayers. Whatever we can do for you, really, we are here. When I was asking about him on Sunday, I had no idea just how much he was really struggling. I'm sorry if I don't know quite what to say too. So sometimes, when I don't know what to say...I just don't say anything for fear that if I do, it will be the wrong REALLY DUMB thing. Just know we love you guys. I'm so sorry you're all going through this. Did you see that conference talk when the man was speaking about how someone was going through cancer and they were asking if they will ever be the same. The doctor said no, you won't. You will be a much better, much stronger, ever-changed for the better person as will those around you. I believe this to be 100% true. Anyway, I will quit rambling. Just want you to know you're always on my mind. :-) Love ya!

I sent the video clip to the coaches at Fergus High. One coach was watching when some of the players walked in. It had a powerful impact on all of them knowing that he was the son of an past Eagle player and the grandson of an Eagle's coach. They hope to meet Tim. One of the players offered to have a fund raiser to pay for Tim's trip to Montana to take in a game on the sidelines. Many players and coaches offered their prayers and even donated what I believe was their lunch money (players) to help with expenses. The entire team and coaching staff are wearing "Tim, No Fear Here" bracelets.

I believe in the power of fasting and in prayer and will join with other family members in May.
