Birthday Skiing!

I guess I had it coming, sooner or later! For my birthday this past week, Cory got me skiing lessons at the Canyons in Park City. We were up early that day to meet with the instructors at 9am! Aren't we just the cutest things ever?
There was about eight of us in the group. The lesson started out very basic: this is a ski, here is the binding, this is how to get in and out of the ski and so on. Before I knew, I was going down the "bunny hill" and trying to turn. I stayed on that hill all morning mastering my form and turns! Here's a view of me about half way down the hill. I loved it! That is until I had to get on the stupid belt that hauled you back up the hill. It's like one of those moving sidewalks in the airport. But when you get on it in skies, everything gets thrown off balance and of course, I lost my balance, fell over backwards, and stopped the belt. Another time, I fell off to the side! The little kids did better than me, but then they have better balance and not as much height to worry about balancing!!
After some much needed lunch, I was back on the "bunny hill" just a couple of more times before "graduating" to the Mountain Meadow green run. I was terrified when I got off the lift and looked down. But, the instructor took the group (now down to 4) down the hill very slowly and had us do a lot of turning. And we just kept at it run after run. Then she had us go down a small half pipe. Not such a good idea! The pipe was a mess from all the snow boarders. I fell twice and said "no more!" She even had us go through a trail in the trees. Not my most favorite-too many little kids zooming past us and the snow was wet! This is part of the run I went down and a view of Park City in the distance!
The lesson ended at 3:30 (I got about 5 hours of instruction total.) Cory and I went down the hill one more time together, then I called it quits. I sat while Cory went down a blue run. This was his third time skiing, so the instructors moved him up a group! This is a really bad picture of the end of the run just before the lodge.
After skiing, we headed to Midway for a night's stay at the Homestead Resort. We took a dip in the "crater" after checking in. The water felt so good on our sore muscles! We snorkeled around for awhile and watched the scuba drivers:) Check out their web site for more info on the crater: Homestead Crater.
After soaking for about an hour, he headed to our room. This is what we ran into. Our room was in the yellow building that is in the right hand side of the picture. And to get to our room, we had to walk right by the deer. They just stood there and watched us, didn't move at all. And in the morning, they were bedded down in the same area. Pretty cool to see!
So, did I have a good birthday? YES!! Am I hooked on skiing? YES!! Will I be going skiing anytime soon? NO!! I am still very sore:) Give me another couple of days though and I will be ready to hit the slopes! Who knows, maybe our family has found a new winter activity!!
